The Igniter and Flame Probe works by igniting gas when power is applied. To break it down further, the igniter rod becomes hot when power is applied and begins to glow red, leading to ignition. This is known as hot surface ignition or HIS.

The flame rod is part of the flame proving system. When an electrical current is passed from the ignition module to the flame rod, it then travel through the flame to earth and this process is called flame rectification.

Note: The flame proving system will only work when the water heater is connected to a correctly polarised and earthed neutral mains supply.
